About (Long Description)

Do you struggle with preparing your own meals?

Meals on Wheels is a service that delivers nutritious meals to your home.

Meals on Wheels organizations operate differently across the province.  For example, not all locations deliver every day of the week, and they may offer hot or frozen meals. Also, not every area in New Brunswick has a Meals on Wheels organization.

Who Qualifies?

If you are unable to prepare your own meals short-term or long-term, Meals on Wheels may be able to help.

While anyone can access Meals on Wheels, it is generally intended to help seniors, people with disabilities, and those recovering from illness, surgery, or injury.

Some examples of when you may benefit from Meals on Wheels are:

  • You have difficulty preparing your own meals due to health challenges.
  • You’ve had a planned or unexpected surgery and making meals while you recover is challenging.
  • Your family member or caregiver is away on vacation.
  • It is difficult for you to stand for long periods of time which limits your ability to prepare your own meals.
  • You have some memory problems, and it may not be safe for you to work in your kitchen on your own.
  • You are recovering from an illness, or injury, and making adequate meals is challenging.
How Do I Apply? (Process Steps)

Locate a Meals on Wheels organization in your area.

The Department of Social Development has a list of Meals on Wheels organizations that have a contract with the department. All Meals on Wheels organizations that have a contract with the Department of Social Development are required to follow the department’s Meal Service Standards for Service Provider Agencies.

Call the organization to discuss the following:

  • Delivery locations,
  • Meal information (example: cost per meal? hot or cold? how often?),
  • Payments options,
  • How to cancel when/if the service is no longer needed,
  • Specific dietary needs (example: diabetic, allergies, etc.).

If you need help to pay for Meals on Wheels, you can apply through the Long Term Care Program or the Disability Support Program. A social worker will complete an assessment, help develop a plan, and coordinate the services that best meet your needs. If eligible, you may qualify for financial help towards the cost of services.

Visit the Long Term Care Program or Disability Support Program pages to learn more.
