The PKU Program provides services to children and adults in New Brunswick with phenylketonuria (PKU). PKU is a genetic condition that impairs the ability to metabolize phenylalanine (Phe), an amino acid found in protein. Treatment mainly consists of a low-protein diet. Special low-protein products are required to assure adequate nutrition and optimal metabolic control.
The PKU Program consists of multidisciplinary health care professionals who work closely together to provide individualized services. The team includes the following members:
- Pediatrician
- Family physician
- Nurse
- Dietitian
- Social worker
- Psychologist
- Coordinator
- Administrative assistant.
The program offers routine follow-up visits and provides a medical formula and specialty products to patients. While the primary centre for the PKU Program is based in Moncton, some of the team members regularly travel to the other health care zones to provide services to patients throughout the province.
