About (Long Description

Are you homeless and need a temporary place to stay?

If you or someone you know is homeless, there are shelters that can provide temporary accommodations and necessities such as food, clothing and referrals for medical and social services.

Homelessness is a multi-dimensional issue that relates to more than shelter, including:

  • Food security: Visit Food For All NB for information on food programs
  • Mental health and addictions: Visit the mental health page of this website for resources and support.
  • Population-specific challenges: For instance, offenders who are released and have nowhere to live.

How outreach services can help

Outreach Workers help people who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness by:

  • Referring people to shelters.
  • Helping people apply for support services like income assistance.
  • Going with people to appointments when needed.
  • Working with Housing NB and other staff to track progress and provide updates.
  • Preventing evictions when possible.
  • Taking referrals from community partners.

Who qualifies?

You are eligible for New Brunswick shelters and the help they offer if you are:

  • Experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness, and
  • 19 years or older (There are also youth homeless shelters in New Brunswick for people under the age of 19).

Types of Shelters

There are different types of shelters. Some are dormitory style; the majority are dry, meaning residents can’t consume alcohol in the shelter, although some are “damp” or “wet.” Some homeless shelters are co-ed, while others offer gender-specific housing. All shelters are financially supported by the province of New Brunswick.

NEW 24/7 HUB for individuals who are homeless or about to be homeless

If you don't have a stable place to live or you're worried about not having a home, the new Homeless 24/7 HUB drop-in centers are here to help you. Here's what they'll do:

All-in-one support: The centers will offer different kinds of help all in one place. Government, community agencies, and local teams that support individuals who are homeless will work together to support you. The goal is to remove barriers and help you find a place to live instead of staying in emergency shelters.

Connecting you to services: When you come to these centers, they'll help you get services for health, mental health, addictions, assessing money, getting ID, reuniting with family, and more. They'll connect you to the services you need to make your life better.
